Art can transform a space and inspire the imagination. Even if you aren’t an artist, you appreciate the magic the arts bring to life, so get ready to ignite your creativity with an arts-inspired weekend in Reno Tahoe. You can find murals and sculptures adorning almost every corner in MidTown and downtown Reno, the state’s only accredited art museum, immersive cultural experiences and a calendar filled with events and festivals.

Day 1: A Riverwalk Art and Gastronomy Dream

Are you a coffee lover on a quest for the ultimate caffeine fix? Start your morning at Maple Moon Coffee in the Basement, or visit Rising for People Coffee Company where you can sample a bit of everything with their coffee flight. This one-of-a-kind experience lets you have some of your favorites as well as a sample of unique flavor combinations.

Now that you’ve fueled up for the day, stroll through the scenic Riverwalk District along the Truckee River. There are plenty of photo opportunities, between the natural beauty of the river and the sculptures and murals you’ll see along the way. City Plaza is home to the Space Whale and the iconic BELIEVE sculpture, and Bicentennial Park is a great place to relax with the sound of the river and the numerous Burning Man sculptures.

Less than two blocks from the river is Thali, a great lunch option where you’ll find some of the most authentic organic Indian food in town. Their menu is made with fresh, local ingredients, and traditional and contemporary flavors blend seamlessly. The bottomless lunch option guarantees you’ll stay satisfied and dream of Thali tomorrow!

After lunch, take a short walk to the Nevada Museum of Art, with both permanent and touring exhibitions from local, national and international artists. Notable exhibitions have included work by Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keefe, Jordan D. Schnitzer, Sonia Falcone and more.

Get dinner at Smith and River or Wild River Grille and take in views of the Truckee River while enjoying your meal. Make sure to try Smith and River’s incredible crab cakes! Whether you’re in the mood for a late-night show at Shim’s Surplus and Supplies Speakeasy, cocktails with a rooftop view at Lo-Bar, or a wine flight at Whispering Vine, Reno has the creative flair to make your night truly enchanting.

Day 2: Lakeside and Local Wonders Await!

Wake up early to catch your tour with Pineapple Pedicabs and take in the city’s murals. A guide will share the history and artistic contexts for each larger-than-life murals you’ll see. Don’t forget to hop off and take tons of photos! For brunch, visit Two Chicks in MidTown for homemade, elevated comfort food. Be sure to try one of their award-winning bloody marys or mimosas made with fresh-squeezed juice.

In the afternoon, take the scenic drive to Lake Tahoe and explore the rich history of Thunderbird Lodge during a guided tour. This historic residence, once owned by George Whittell, Jr., stands as one of the most stunning museums along the lake, taking you on a journey through time and luxury.

On your way back to Reno, grab a late lunch or early dinner in Incline Village. A couple of local gems include Sage Leaf Tahoe and Bite Restaurant. Sage Leaf is committed to using local and sustainable ingredients, and Bite serves up tapas that are perfect for sharing (or not!).

Enjoy entertainment like a local at one of Reno’s many independently-owned theaters and arts centers, such as Holland Project, Biggest Little Theater or Bruka Theater. Each location has unique charm that adds to the experience. Check the calendar at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, as they host an annual Broadway Series, special dance, music and stage performances, and is home to the Reno Philharmonic.
