Sure, a strenuous hike will often reward you with panoramic views, but sometimes all you really want is a nice, easy stroll. The Tahoe East Shore Trail lets you have the best of both worlds – a wide, paved trail that winds along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe, offering you constant breathtaking views of the lake. The trail is open to those on foot and on bikes, and runs between Tunnel Creek Cafe and Sand Harbor State Park with plenty of places to stop along the way.

A 600-foot-tall sand dune in the middle of nowhere? We should have warned you to expect the unexpected around here. Sand Mountain Recreation Area, located about an hour and a half from Reno, is nearly 4,800 acres designated as an OHV site. This natural phenomenon is the result of years of windblown sand being stopped by the Stillwater Mountains to the north, east and west. Sand Mountain itself is 3.5 miles long and a mile wide, making it a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts.
