Reno Tahoe has an abundance of trails and open spaces to enjoy during every season, whether you're hiking, biking or enjoying the beaches during the warmer months, or snowshoeing or skiing in the winter, it's always possible to find solitude in the outdoors.
Responsibility and Safety on Reno Tahoe Trails
But before you head out on your next adventure, please know and respect these new rules of the trail to help keep everyone healthy.
Check Before You Go
When planning your hike or bike ride, check the available services at trails and parks, such as parking, visitor centers or restrooms, and plan accordingly. If you're exploring the outdoors with your furry friends, make sure you know and respect the trail rules. Most trails in Reno Tahoe are open to dogs but may have on-leash rules in place to protect local wildlife and other natural resources.
Pack It In, Pack It Out
Even if there are trash cans at the trailhead and parking areas, it's always a good idea to be prepared to pack out your trash. Keep the trails, beaches and open spaces clean by packing out anything you bring on your outdoor adventure including food wrappers, damaged equipment, pet waste and other trash. If you'd like to volunteer to help keep Reno Tahoe's trails and waterways clean, there are several organizations that offer clean-up opportunities. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Keep Tahoe Blue and Clean Up the Lake are just a few nonprofits that rely on volunteers to keep our outdoor spaces clean for all of us who love to enjoy them.
Avoid Busy Times and Popular Trails
Reno Tahoe's busiest trails, parks and open spaces are popular for a reason, but sometimes it's fun to explore some lesser-known areas. If you arrive at your favorite trail and find the parking lot full, have a plan for exploring a different trail or come back at another time. Visit our Reno hiking, Lake Tahoe hiking and biking pages for a list of trailheads in the area. You might just find a new favorite!
Prioritize Wildfire Prevention
Everyone can do their part to prevent wildfires in the Reno Tahoe area. Avoid driving through dry grass and know current fire restrictions when camping. If campfires are allowed, make sure you understand how to properly build and extinguish those fires.
Be Considerate
We all love to enjoy the beauty of Reno Tahoe's many natural wonders! Remember to respect any directional signage on trails, and know the rules of yielding to hikers and equestrians. Help keep our trails, beaches and outdoors pristine for years to come. For more tips for recreating outdoors in a safe and healthy way, check out Leave No Trace Center and Washoe County Parks.
